How to tell your employer you are leaving your job
So, you are ready to quit, but you are not sure of the best way to tell your employer that you are leaving your job.
It can be a challenge to take a calm and rational approach to resigning especially when you feel that you have been mistreated or underappreciated. However, it is very important to keep a professional demeanor and keep all communication positive or neutral at least. There in nothing to gain by being negative, no matter how wronged you feel.
Always make sure to do the following:
Thank your employer for the opportunity
Expressing gratitude for the opportunity to grow in your current role is a good way to start. Why not reference any new skills that you have learned during your time in employment?
State the reasons as to why you are leaving
You do not have to go into too much detail about your new job. For example, if you were working in inside sales, you may just mention that you have landed a role within outside sales.
Offer help with the transition
If appropriate you may want to state that you are happy and willing to train a replacement, or at the very least that you are available to ask questions regarding any current accounts.
Give notice
Notice periods can vary from one week to a month, and in some circumstances longer. Make sure you check your employment contract for full details on your notice period. Make sure you ask your employer should you wish to end your employment sooner.
